Microsoft to end support for long-running writing app after almost 30 years

Microsoft has announced it’s shutting down a long-running app after almost 30 years.

The tech giant this week shared it had stopped updating the WordPad app, and it would not be included in any future release of Windows.

“WordPad is no longer being updated and will be removed in a future release of Windows,” Microsoft said in a blog post.

“We recommend Microsoft Word for rich text documents like .doc and .rtf and Windows Notepad for plain text documents like .txt.”

The basic writing app was introduced with Windows 95 in the mid-1990s, offering basic editing functions and the ability to add images and Excel spreadsheets.

But it lacks many functions that are available in Microsoft Word, including spell checking or word counts.

It also hasn’t been updated with any new functions since the release of Windows 7, more than a decade ago.

WordPad is not the only Windows stalwart being removed.

In June, Microsoft announced it was ending support for its virtual assistant Cortana as a standalone app.
