Real Sociedad 1-2 PSG (1-4 agg): Player ratings as Mbappe double seals quarter-final spot

Image
Kylian Mbappe netted twice as Paris Saint-Germain breezed through to the Champions League quarter-final s at Real Sociedad's expense. The Parisians won 2-0 in the first leg and picked up a 2-1 victory this time around with a throughly impressive performance. Mbappe struck the Game into life with a glorious opener and extinguished any hope of a comeback with a composed finish early in the second half, with Mikel Merino's late effort little more than a consolation. How the game unfolded Bardley Barcola was denied from point-blank range ten minutes in after Mbappe breezed away from his defender and fizzed a cut-back across the box. Sociedad goalkeeper Alex Remiro didn't appear to know a whole lot about the save. Five minutes later, Mbappe went alone. Dancing his way around two defenders, the Frenchman crashed a glorious effort into the bottom corner, striking with so much force that it actually broke the net and led to a lengthy stoppage while the repairs were made. Man Utd 0-1 Bayern Munich: Player ratings as Red Devils limp out of Champions League in drab defeat

Image
Manchester United limped out of the Champions League on Tuesday evening in a woeful 1-0 defeat to Bayern Munich at Old Trafford. After a cagey and ultimately goalless first half in Manchester, Kingsley Coman's second-half strike was pretty much the only moment of quality in a drab encounter. Erik ten Hag's side needed a win to have any hope of survival but also relied on Copenhagen and Galatasaray sharing the spoils elsewhere, but victory for the Danish side meant there was nothing United could have done to survive. How the game unfolded In the knowledge that only a win would do, Man Utd certainly upped the intensity from their dismal 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth at the weekend. However, the hosts couldn't cause Bayern too many problems early on, the best they could muster in the opening half-hour being Luke Shaw's long-range effort that was comfortably dealt with by Manuel Neuer. The Bundesliga champions did give United some scares in the first-half, Leroy Sane's dar...

Man Utd 0-3 Bournemouth: Player ratings as Red Devils humiliated by Cherries

Image
Manchester United were humbled by Bournemouth with a 3-0 defeat in the Premier League on Saturday. The Cherries registered their first ever win at Old Trafford in some style, playing their hosts off the park and were good value for the large margin of scoreline. Questions will be asked of Erik ten Hag after his team played directly into Bournemouth's hands time and time again, with the scarce home supporters who stayed until the end booing off the Red Devils at full-time. How the game unfolded With five minutes on the clock, Bournemouth took a shock lead. Bruno Fernandes' poor ball from the back towards Scott McTominay was intercepted by Lewis Cook, who made a dart to the byline and cut back for Dominic Solanke to flick in. United sought to find an immediate leveller, with Sergio Reguilon's looping and high cross finding the head of Harry Maguire, forcing Neto into a stretching save. Bournemouth went close to doubling their advantage on the counter attack when Fernandes ag...

Luton 3-4 Arsenal: Player ratings as Rice strikes late to spare Raya's blushes

Image
Arsenal limped away from Kenilworth Road with a 4-3 win after Declan Rice's stoppage-time winner spared David Raya's blushes . The Arsenal stopper was guilty of two huge errors to hand goals to Elijah Adebayo and Ross Barkley, whose effort put Luton 3-2 up on the hour mark. Kai Havertz made it 3-3 shortly after, and just as it looked as though Raya's errors would prove costly, up stepped Rice in the last minute of an additional six to find the back of the net and save his side. How the game unfolded The opening stages were unsurprisingly controlled by Arsenal, but Luton were brave on the counter and pressed high, leading to a handful of nervy moments for the visitors. However, one poor back pass from Amari'i Bell proved to be Luton's undoing as Arsenal pounced on the mistake to take the lead. From an unnecessary throw-in, Bukayo Saka found Gabriel Martinelli and the Brazilian stabbed home the opener 20 minutes in. Arsenal's lead would last just four minutes as t...

Arsenal 6-0 Lens: Player ratings as Gunners cruise into Champions League last 16

Image
Arsenal are into the Champions League knockout stages for the first time since 2017, booking their place in the last 16 and top of Group B with a game to spare after a thumping win over Lens. The Gunners were rampant from the earliest stages, taking a 13th minute lead through Kai Havertz from close range. Gabriel Jesus soon doubled that advantage, before further goals from Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli had the home side 4-0 up and fully cruising inside half an hour. Martin Odegaard made it five before half-time with a well-timed volley, with Jorginho scoring a late penalty as Arsenal took full revenge for a surprise defeat in the reverse fixture on matchday two. How the game unfolded The Gunners had a couple of sightings of goal before they took the lead, including Havertz just missing the target from a header. It was only moments later that he did find the net to get the ball rolling, managing to touch Gabriel Jesus' nod across goal beyond Brice Samba. Provider turned goalsc...

Man City 3-2 RB Leipzig: Player ratings as Cityzens come from behind to seal top spot

Image
Manchester City completed a miraculous second-half comeback to beat RB Leipzig 3-2 and seal top spot in their Champions League group. Despite sending out a strong team, Pep Guardiola watched his side struggle horribly in the first half as Lois Openda put Leipzig two goals ahead, but City turned the Game on its head after the interval. Erling Haaland and Phil Foden struck to tie things up before substitute Alvarez tapped home a late winner to steer City through to the knockout stages as group winners. How the game unfolded Ambitious volleys from Bernardo Silva and Manuel Akanji got things started early on, while Leipzig starlet Xavi Simons sent a nice sight of goal frustratingly wide of Stefan Ortega's post. Some route-one stuff handed Leipzig the game's opening goal 13 minutes in. Lois Openda shrugged off attention from Akanji and collected a long ball from goalkeeper Janis Blaswich, before calmly slotting beyond Ortega. Ruben Dias headed agonisingly over as City sought an imm...

Man Utd 1-0 Luton: Player ratings as Lindelof fires Red Devils to gritty win

Image
Manchester United secured a hard-fought 1-0 win over Luton Town at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon. The underdog visitors sat deep in an attempt to frustrate United and were largely successful before Victor Lindelof fired home shortly before the hour mark to steer the Red Devils to a much-needed victory. United did suffer throughout the Game and lost both Christian Eriksen and Rasmus Hojlund to injury, further adding to Erik ten Hag's headache. How the game unfolded Luton barely even touched the ball inside the first ten minutes but goalkeeper Thomas Kaminski made the most of his first involvement with an outstanding save to deny Hojlund from near point-blank range. Scott McTominay headed over the bar five minutes later and it wasn't long before Alejandro Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes blazed high as well, with United boasting close to 75% possession midway through the first half and looking like the only team likely to score. United's pressure was relentless but Luton st...
