Resident Evil Creator Shinji Mikami Is Leaving Xbox Game Studios

The famed creator of the Resident Evil series and boss of the studio that has created some highly acclaimed games is leaving the company he founded.

Shinji Mikami is a name known among Games enthusiasts and those in the industry, and the Japanese developer has led Tango Gameworks for the past 12 years. But today, Bethesda Softworks senior vice president Todd Vaughn announced that he is to leave the studio in the "coming months". Verified by TrueAchievements, it is as yet unclear what Mikami's next venture will be.

Mikami is best known for his work on the Resident Evil series, which he created and helmed for Capcom, where he worked for 16 years before leaving to found Tango Gameworks in spring 2010. The developer's talent and skill was clearly appealing because Tango Gameworks was acquired by Bethesda Softworks' parent company Zenimax Media just several months later.

Zenimax Media was itself acquired by Microsoft in 2021 in a deal worth $7.5 billion, which is how Shinji Mikami came to be under the Xbox Game Studios umbrella. In a company wide email, Vaughn praised the veteran's influence and support.

"Mikami-san has been a creative leader and supportive mentor to young developers at Tango for 12 years through his work on the Evil Within franchise, Ghostwire: Tokyo, and of course, Hi-Fi Rush", Vaughn wrote. The Bethesda VP mentioned that Hi-Fi Rush, which was shadow dropped during a recent developer showcase, was "one of the most successful launches for Bethesda and Xbox in recent years".

Tango Gameworks will continue to support the likes of Ghostwire: Tokyo and Hi-Fi Rush while Bethesda bosses will meet and decide who will lead the studio. It'll be a tough position to replace as Mikami is one of the most influential developers in the industry. With a career spread across 33 years, Mikami had a hand in some notable titles, namely the Resident Evil series, up until the fourth entry, as well as the likes of Dino Crisis, Viewtiful Joe, and Vanquish, not to mention more recent standouts such as the brilliant Evil Within series.

In the coming months, and later this year, perhaps we will see what Mikami has up his sleeve as he takes a new step in his garlanded career.
