Biden commutes sentences of 31 convicted of drug crimes

President Joe Biden has commuted the sentences of 31 people convicted of nonviolent drug crimes who were serving time in home confinement WASHINGTON -- President Joe Biden has commuted the sentences of 31 people convicted of nonviolent drug crimes who were serving time in home confinement, the White House announced Friday. Many would have gotten a lower sentence if they were charged today with the same offense because of changes in the laws. A commuted sentence means they'll spend less time in home confinement. The commutations came as the White House announced a set of policy actions across 20 different agencies meant to improve the criminal justice system, which disproportionately affects Black and other non-white communities. The president announced his reelection campaign this week, and must keep Black voters in his coalition if he wants to win in 2024. The plan is an effort to expand health care access, affordable housing and education, and make it easier for those who have...

Mikel Arteta refusing to give up in Premier League title race after Man City defeat

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is refusing to give up in the Premier League title race following Wednesday night’s 4-1 thrashing at the hands of Manchester City. Arteta had played down suggestions beforehand that it would be a title decider. But the result now leaves Arsenal , who have suddenly gone four league Game s without a win, only two points ahead of City and having also played two Game s more. Pep Guardiola stated immediately after the final whistle that City’s next three Game s – the first of which is their first Game in hand – will be crucial in deciding where the title goes. “We were beaten by the better team, that’s for sure,” Arteta reflected to BT Sport , before suggesting that Arsenal didn’t even get the basics right. “[Man City] were exceptional and when that’s the case, it’s extremely difficult to reach that level and we were no way near our level. When you open that gap against them, you get punished. “You have to compete and win your duels, and all the very basic t...

Tired of relying on an understaffed police department, scores of men in the Canape Vert neighborhood of Port-au-Prince spent the night on roofs and patrolled entrances of their community blocked with big trucks spray-painted with the words, “Down with gangs .” “We are planning to fight and keep our neighborhood clean of these savages,” Jeff Ezequiel, a 37-year-old mechanic, told The Associated Press. “The population is tired and frustrated.” The makeshift brigade i...

The Premier League table from Cristian Stellini's games in charge of Tottenham

The circus is in town in north London once again. The main attraction this time around? Cristian Stellini packing up his desk and leaving town after Tottenham were humiliated by Newcastle on Sunday. The former assistant manager was handed full control after Antonio Conte's acrimonious departure but was unable to get a tune out of the Spurs squad or assert any organisation and left on Monday with Ryan Mason assuming control. There are a number of reasons why Tottenham's implosion has been so catastrophic. They even set a 90min record by being named our crisis club of the week for the third time this season. Stellini's record since taking control isn't pretty, with his one win coming in pretty controversial circumstances. Here's the Premier League table from that period. Premier League table from Cristian Stellini's games in charge of Tottenham First things first; we're not counting the Premier League Game s where Stellini stood in for Conte when the former ...

'People are suffering': Food stamp woes worsen Alaska hunger

Thousands of Alaskans who depend on government assistance have waited months for food stamp benefits, exacerbating a hunger crisis laid bare by the pandemic, inflation and the remnants of a typhoon EAGLE RIVER, Alaska -- Thousands of Alaskans who depend on government assistance have waited months for food stamp benefits, exacerbating a long-standing hunger crisis worsened by the pandemic, inflation and the remnants of a typhoon that wiped out stockpiles of fish and fishing equipment. The backlog, which began last August, is especially concerning in a state where communities in far-flung areas, including Alaska Native villages, are often not connected by roads. They must have food shipped in by barge or airplane, making the cost of even basic goods exorbitant. Around 13% of the state's roughly 735,000 residents received Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits — or SNAP — in July, before the troubles began. “People are struggling and having to make choices of getting food ...
